Who doesn't love a week off of school with no alarm clocks or homework? Ben and Alex!
We kicked off the week with a trip to U-Swirl, a make-your-own frozen yogurt shop that I'd put off introducing the kids to because I know they'll want to go all the time (we've now been three times!). Ben barely had time to stop eating for a picture.
Alex loved it but regretted getting so much yogurt and not enough toppings. He asked if next time he could just get a bowl full of toppings :)
We had a playdate with two of Alex's friends and their precious new puppy, Lila. Casey LOVED her! I couldn't believe how big 7-pound Casey looked next to a 3-pound puppy. Everything is relative.
Lila got tons of attention and, with the focus off of her, Casey enjoyed playing with everyone outside for the first time.
The kids and I had to make a stop at the Houston Children's Museum to do their favorite activities. Ben loves the circuits.
Alex loves powering the lightbulbs with his energy.
We all had fun in our favorite place to explore and learn. Lucky for them their mom is a science nerd!
The kids got some grandparent time, Matt and I got some alone time, and then we all got back together for our first camping trip on Lake Buchanan, near Burnet. Only problem was that the lake dried up during the drought in 2011 and hasn't filled back up. We expected the dock to be a little closer to the water!
No worries for these guys...they didn't mind that we couldn't fish because there was more to explore on the lake bed/field.
We did enjoy the nature and scenery, although we also could have done without all the prickly pear cactus. Alex got stickers all over his feet within five minutes of setting up camp and was ready to go home! Luckily, he learned to keep his shoes on.
The boys were busy, busy. They were either exploring or playing cars in the red dirt...
...learning some new skills....
...and at night, after dinner and smores, endlessly entertained in their tent.
We did enjoy cooking out and eating under the stars.
The sunset on our last evening was beautiful and we soaked in all the colors as the sky faded.
We put the cell phones away and went completely unplugged all weekend, except for keeping an eye on the weather. We did get a shower and were fortunate to miss some big thunderstorms, but we knew a cold front was rolling through our last night so we were ready to pack up and leave on our last morning. Everyone stayed warm and happy so we considered the trip a great success!
