We made a quick weekend trip to Alabama so Matt and the boys could do some turkey hunting. The weather wasn't particularly cooperative, but everyone still got to go out in the woods.
The kids and I enjoyed a little confetti egg hunt, which is particularly fun there because the cleanup is so easy out in the country!
A little throwing practice with the confetti eggs against the house.
Confetti rain!
Casey "helped" as much as possible. She was really good in the car for the long ride and loved exploring once she got over her anxiety of a new place.
Little city dog turned out to be quite the country dog and loved running in the mud. She was tired at night!
Alex found lots of ladybug friends to entertain.
On our last morning, Matt hit the jackpot! It was a fun trip all around.

Spring Break
Who doesn't love a week off of school with no alarm clocks or homework? Ben and Alex!
We kicked off the week with a trip to U-Swirl, a make-your-own frozen yogurt shop that I'd put off introducing the kids to because I know they'll want to go all the time (we've now been three times!). Ben barely had time to stop eating for a picture.
Alex loved it but regretted getting so much yogurt and not enough toppings. He asked if next time he could just get a bowl full of toppings :)
We had a playdate with two of Alex's friends and their precious new puppy, Lila. Casey LOVED her! I couldn't believe how big 7-pound Casey looked next to a 3-pound puppy. Everything is relative.
Lila got tons of attention and, with the focus off of her, Casey enjoyed playing with everyone outside for the first time.
The kids and I had to make a stop at the Houston Children's Museum to do their favorite activities. Ben loves the circuits.
Alex loves powering the lightbulbs with his energy.
We all had fun in our favorite place to explore and learn. Lucky for them their mom is a science nerd!
The kids got some grandparent time, Matt and I got some alone time, and then we all got back together for our first camping trip on Lake Buchanan, near Burnet. Only problem was that the lake dried up during the drought in 2011 and hasn't filled back up. We expected the dock to be a little closer to the water!
No worries for these guys...they didn't mind that we couldn't fish because there was more to explore on the lake bed/field.
We did enjoy the nature and scenery, although we also could have done without all the prickly pear cactus. Alex got stickers all over his feet within five minutes of setting up camp and was ready to go home! Luckily, he learned to keep his shoes on.
The boys were busy, busy. They were either exploring or playing cars in the red dirt...
...learning some new skills....
...and at night, after dinner and smores, endlessly entertained in their tent.
We did enjoy cooking out and eating under the stars.
The sunset on our last evening was beautiful and we soaked in all the colors as the sky faded.
We put the cell phones away and went completely unplugged all weekend, except for keeping an eye on the weather. We did get a shower and were fortunate to miss some big thunderstorms, but we knew a cold front was rolling through our last night so we were ready to pack up and leave on our last morning. Everyone stayed warm and happy so we considered the trip a great success!

Houston Rodeo
We love rodeo season! We took the kids out of school early and headed to the Houston rodeo so we could have some fun at the carnival and livestock show before the big rodeo.
We're big fans of the petting zoo and went to two different ones.
The event Matt and I were most excited to see was some Mutton Bustin'...this time with our own kids! We didn't even give the boys a choice - we just signed them up. And funny story - they said normally the cutoff was at 6, but we assured them that Ben was under the 55 lb limit. We had our second grader step on the scale and show those ladies that it's possible to weigh 51 lbs in second grade!
Ready to ride!
Pretty ready to ride (but maybe getting a bit nervous)!
Alex's sheep was a disappointment and stumbled a little out of the gate, but I guess they don't give re-rides to the kindergarten crowd. We just knew for sure Alex would hold on to that animal forever!
"Mom, that sheep made me cry!" Someone was not a fan of taking a header into the dirt.
Ben did much better, thanks to his light weight and long arms, but a little girl still beat him out for the win. (and the cameraman didn't quite catch the fall)
Afterward, all the kids walked out for their applause and the winner got her belt buckle. It was so much fun!
Frowns turned into smiles when each kid got a ribbon and a sucker!
We enjoyed the rest of our afternoon seeing all the exhibits and animals.
The rodeo was entertaining and Reba put on a terrific concert. The boys knew her as "the voice from the Magic Schoolbus" so they were excited to see her as well. What a fun family day.

Icy Weather, Take Three
It has been an unusually cold and wet winter for the Houston area. School had already been cancelled twice for icy road conditions and we thought we might get a third day off. Alex looked out the window and saw this and started celebrating...but unfortunately for him, this time the roads didn't ice up so school went on as scheduled.
We did spend some time enjoyed the frozen yard on the way to the bus stop.
So much for spring!
We never did see snow but the freezing rain collected on everything outside.
A little fun on the frozen playground, then the kids were off to school.
Ben finally hit a big milestone - reading a chapter book BY CHOICE! It was a Ready Freddy and apparently funny enough to keep his interest. He has even asked to stay up reading after bedtime. Um, YES!!!
He also loves his puppy! And Casey loves the boys, too. She has even started checking out their doors first thing in the morning to see if they're awake yet. If there is any noise or light, she noses her way in to say good morning.

The kids loved attacking the ice with their umbrellas.

Casey didn't waste much time finding the best seat in the house!

Baby Carter
I am a proud aunt again, this time to sweet Carter Graham! I was so, so excited to get to share in the miracle of a new life with Stacey and Jason and God blessed them with a perfect little man.
Just a few hours old and sleeping like a doll. I couldn't wait to hold that little bundle!
A big thanks to Grandma Kirkham for keeping our house in order and the boys in line so I could be with the French family. I got to spend time with Reid while his parents were at the hospital and he helped take a gift to his new baby brother.
Reid thought that Carter was cute but was more interested in getting his mom out of the hospital and back home!
It was wonderful hanging out with this little man and spending time with Stacey. I never got to enjoy the early days of either of my boys so I really relished every minute. Plus, being an aunt is extra fun because when the baby cries, he just goes back to mom :) Already looking forward to our next visit with this sweet little guy!
