At each desk was a bound book full of the kids' work through the year and a handmade tote with artwork.
This was extra special - a laminated mat with Ben's characteristics. I wasn't surprised because I laminated and cut out the class set, but I also got to read about each child as I did it so I got to know the class a little better. I thought these were really special gifts from Mrs. Cooper! Especially because she so accurately described Ben.
These little guys and girls were dying to show off what they'd prepared for the parents.
Each child had written about his favorite parts of first grade (mostly music, art, recess, and science...although one kid said math, because it's so easy) and why he liked the year. Most of the kids read it aloud, but several asked Mrs. Cooper to read it instead. I was so proud of Ben for reading his own! I know it's hard to hear, but he said he loved first grade, loved his teacher, loved music and recess.
We watched a great video of pictures throughout the year from all of first grade. I didn't get the tearjerker warning, but they played "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts and I wish I'd brought kleenex. Especially when the class was singing along...I guess they'd already watched it a few times. The lyrics:
"My Wish"
I hope that the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you where you want to go,
And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,
If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,
But more than anything, more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
I hope you never look back, but ya never forget,
All the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
And you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
And you always give more than you take.
But more than anything, yeah, and more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
This is my wish
I hope you know somebody loves you
May all your dreams stay big
And each road leads you where you want to go,
And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,

This is my wish
I hope you know somebody loves you
May all your dreams stay big
Finally, the class finished up with a cheer and we got lots of hugs and kisses.
It's almost time to check the box on Ben's list that says "finished first grade"!
