Mullaloo Beach

Just when I think we've explored most of Perth's coastline, I find out about another great beach! I saw a friend's pictures (she's a photographer with some fantastic shots of WA...check them out here) of Mullaloo beach and was thrilled to find out it's only about 40 minutes from our house. The kids and I checked it out one afternoon last week.

We weren't exactly in beach gear but Ben was so excited to find good sand for building that he jumped right in.

It's just water and sand, right? And this should explain why I find sand in nearly every square inch of our house...washer, dryer, toys, cars, beds, bathtubs, sinks...you get the idea. I love living by the beach and knowing any day we may end up there, but it's not as much fun bringing sand into a home that's not just a vacation rental.

I couldn't wait to take the family back and enjoy the great sand and gentle waves, and we got the perfect day today. Warm sun, cool breeze, happy kids and parents! We arrived bright and early and all got busy working on our creations in the sand.

All the guys started on a big sand castle.

I decided to put my efforts into a little pool for Alex. He loved it and spent the better part of the day jumping and splashing in it whenever waves filled it up. The rest of the time I heard "more water, please!" since he didn't seem to understand that I couldn't control the waves.

Alex says "I swim!"

Daddy brought out the big shovel today and might have made it into the local record books for the most ambitious sand castle.

Almost as tall as Ben!

The boys were having so much fun I had to force them to sit down and eat lunch. Finally around 2:30, Alex started to fall apart and refused to nap in the tent, so he and I went for a drive/rest/nap. I decided to explore up the coast a bit farther and found Yanchep lagoon, another beach we're going to have to enjoy one day.

When we got back to Mullaloo to round up the stragglers, this is how I found Ben. Apparently the sun and sand got the best of him! The wind finally kicked up and it got a bit chilly, too. This boy does NOT like to be cold.

The masterpiece!

After being coached all day to respect the castle, Alex was upset to see another little boy climb on it just minutes after we left. Guess we'll have to go back and make another one soon!
