March 9th was a bittersweet day. It marked one year since the kids had gone to school on a normal Monday morning, and then the news came that school was going virtual for two weeks. Fast forward 52 weeks, and they've never returned to campus for a class.
I promised them if we went an entire year online that we could have cake for breakfast, so we had a little celebration of their endurance!
It's a big buzzword at JIS, but these kids have been incredibly resilient. They have persevered through lonely and hard times and both been very successful. We are so proud of them and all the hard work they've put forth!
Ben did finally have a freshman orientation on campus one Saturday, but otherwise has never been to the high school that he's attended for 3/4 of a year. He has worked so hard to meet the increased demands of high school. Instagram keeps him connected to his friends and entertained.
Alex didn't have to change campuses but has spent more time at his desk than he has in the middle school, and has stayed the course when it's been frustrating. He zooms with his friends Alex and Landon during the breaks as his social outlet.
I'm glad now we didn't know how long this online school would last because I probably would have crawled into a hole last March and not come out. But taking it one day and one week and one month at a time, we've made it work. I hope some day these boys are so proud of all the accomplished!
