Party of 4!

Alex came home today!
I tried not to get too excited just in case anything came up at the last minute to keep him in the hospital but when we arrived this morning they said the paperwork had been done and he was ready to go! I got one last chance to nurse him with some help around, then we dressed little Alex and got ready to leave.

He was not a big fan of his carseat...

One last picture before we left. It was a very nice NICU, just one big room with several babies. We happened to have friends from Texas who have twins in there right now so we got to visit with them and share our experiences, which was nice. Overall it was a great place for Alex to spend a week if he couldn't be at home but I sure hope we're done with NICUs from now on!

Making the big ride home!

Still asleep in the elevator...

And finally home! Ben did not know what to make of the new visitor and he was not coming any closer to check it out. He said "night, night" so he realized the baby was sleeping but wouldn't have anything to do with him. The rest of the afternoon he just completely ignored Alex, but Ben and Daddy went to the pool and to pick up dinner so he still got plenty of attention.
And this is pretty much how Alex spent the rest of his day....sound asleep! It was hard for us to put him down since this is the first chance we've really had to enjoy him and I think he was pretty happy having some peace and quiet and a warm body to sleep against.

What a precious boy!

Ben wanted to take more pictures so I helped a little. I'm not sure how he's doing with all this but he did give Alex a kiss goodnight before he went to bed. Hopefully with me at least being home now, even if I'm preoccupied, Ben will settle down a little. He's been very short-tempered and emotional the past few days like he already knew things had changed.

And tonight, little Alex is still sound asleep! I've tried my best to wake him several times to eat but after 10-15 minutes he's sacked out again. Hopefully he'll have a healthy appetite tomorrow to put some more weight on that little body. I forgot how tiny babies are...Ben just amazes me at how big he is now in comparison.

It's been a very happy day at this household :) We have a beautiful new baby to enjoy and he was definitely worth the wait. And this time around we don't have to worry about oxygen, monitors, medicine, reflux, therapy, or any other preemie-related issues. We feel so blessed and thank God for our perfect new addition.

A Big Day

It's hard being a newborn! First people interrupt your nice naps...

...and then they expect you to look at the camera...

...and even hope for you to smile. It's a lot of work.

Little did Alex know that the worst was yet to come...
"Do you have any idea what they just did to me?!?"
I was privileged to sit in on the circumcision procedure...definitely not for the faint-hearted and probably something I could have lived without, but at least I got to hold Alex's hands and hopefully comfort him a little. Glad we got that over with because it's definitely not something you want a little boy to remember!

Other than that, Alex had a good day and looks ready to come home as early as Sunday!

Sunbathing

This was the sight that greeted me this morning when I got in the NICU...little Alex was sacked out suntanning under the phototherapy lights with his shades on. He looks much better but was going to spend one more night under the lights just to make sure the jaundice completely resolved. Even better news today was that they disconnected his IV (but left the catheter in, just in case) so he's getting full feeds of breastmilk. I went to the hospital twice to give him a chance to nurse and he ate like a little champ! He definitely has a good appetite and caught on quickly to the whole work-for-food idea. It was very encouraging to me because I have no experience in this department since Ben was several months old by the time he was big enough to nurse and he didn't have the energy to get through a meal, so I pumped and bottle-fed him for 6 months. I'm really hoping to cut out the middle man this time.

Here are Daddy and Alex hanging out together after he had his dinner.

The doctor has been very pleased with Alex's progress this week and thinks he'll be ready for home very soon. We've scheduled his circumcision for tomorrow, which they consider a major procedure and want to observe him for a few days afterward, so it would be Sunday at the earliest. It's just not common to circumcise here so it's performed by a pediatric urologist and apparently westerners are the only ones who ask for it first thing. Personally, I think the longer we wait the more cruel it would be so the sooner we get it done the better! Hopefully it will be quick and as painless as possible.

And no, we haven't forgotten about Ben! Poor little guy is definitely not getting the attention he's used to these days but he's been really patient with all the changes, even though he doesn't realize the biggest change is still to come. He talks about "baby Anex" (he's still working on his l's) because he got to see him in the NICU quickly so hopefully when we talk about bringing little brother home he knows who were talking about. I really look forward to watching Ben get to know his little brother.

Here are some pictures from last week that I never got to share. Ben and I had a playground and lunch date and he had a terrific time jumping into the ball pit.

Last Friday I asked him to put on his shoes for school and this is what I got...I guess I need to be more specific and let him know that pants are required as well!

Talking to Daddy at dinnertime...

And this was our last family outing as a threesome, although we didn't know it at the time! I never made it home from this park because I went straight to the hospital.

And if you're wondering why Ben's clothes look so big, it's because they're all size 3's. He's still in 18-24 month clothes for the most part, depending on how they're cut, but he found a drawer of hand-me-downs from his friend Oliver and decided he was going to wear this outfit no matter what! Besides having to pull the pants up over and over, I guess it didn't hurt anything :)

Alex's Big Arrival!

I'm home! And I'm still on painkillers so I apologize in advance if I don't make a lot of sense...Let's go back to Saturday and I'll fill you in on the story of our new addition.

I had a few contractions overnight on Friday, which I thought was odd, but I slept better than I had in weeks. I told Matt Saturday morning that I felt "different" but I thought it was because I'd slept late and so hard. We took Ben to the park and let him run off some energy outside and when we were catching a taxi home I had a pretty strong contraction. I realized I'd already had 5 that morning (6 in a day warranted a visit to the doctor) so I ended up getting out at the hospital while Matt took Ben home for his nap. I was immediately taken to the labor ward and put on monitors, all before they even asked my name, and it was quickly apparent that the contractions were coming steadily. Matt came back soon with my admission paperwork (a huge packet of papers I'd carried around 24 hours a day, except of course for that morning) and the doctor arrived soon afterward. She saw that the contractions were about 8 minutes apart and decided it was time to have a baby. All along she has been very concerned about the fact that I had a vertical uterine incision for Ben's delivery and she did not want me to be in labor for any amount of time in case it began to rupture. Plus, I was officially 36 weeks and 3 days so the outlook was very good for the baby.

Matt and I had that old familiar feeling of panic when a doctor announces that we're having a c-section very soon, but we had to remind ourselves that it was okay this time! We could be excited this time around because we knew the baby was much bigger and better prepared to face the outside world. I did ask if I could take a shower since I was really lazy that morning and didn't clean up before going to the park, but the OR and the anesthesiologist were both free and we had to get going so there was no time. Everything happened very quickly, but not with the urgency or tension we experienced with Ben's birth.

I was prepped and taken to the OR where the anesthesiologist started my IV and epidural. I had a spinal last time (one huge shot straight into the spine...very scary) and I never even felt him insert the catheter for the epidural so I'm thinking that's definitely the way to go! I felt a lot more sensation during the c-section but no pain. Matt came in and the doctor got started. This felt like a much quicker procedure, maybe because I wasn't stressed and vomiting like last time, but also because I was alert and hadn't been loaded up with nasty medications. The doctor pulled out little Alexander Lee and he started crying like a healthy little baby. After the neonatologist had cleaned him up a little I was able to hold him and look into my precious baby's face for a few moments before he was taken to the NICU for observation, since he was considered slightly premature. Those were some of the sweetest minutes of my life! Alex was just perfect. He came out at 6lbs 10oz and 22 inches long. He is what we would have called a "fat baby" in the NICU, back when we were enviously looking at all the chubby babies that came and went while Ben was working so hard to gain an ounce here and there.

Matt went with Alex to the NICU while they finished patching me up and sent me to recovery. I think it was apparent pretty quickly that Alex's lungs were still premature and he was started on some oxygen, then later placed on CPAP to give him both oxygen and pressure. We were disappointed but not too surprised since white male babies are the slowest to develop and the lungs are the last of the major organs to function. It was really nice this time around to be in the same hospital so I could get updates from the doctor while I was still confined to bed and Matt didn't have to drive 40 miles to take care of his wife and his baby! On Sunday morning I was able to get out of bed and go visit Alex down the hall and get a better look at him. He looks NOTHING like any of us yet, especially Ben. His little face is round and chubby and he has really dark hair on his head. Right now his eyes are brownish-bluish, so they could still go either way.

By Sunday night, I was getting depressed about having a baby in the NICU again, I think more from the deja vu than what Alex was actually going through. He hated the prongs from the CPAP in his nose, of course, and was crying and wiggling around to get them out so it was hard to see this little newborn already having to suffer through something uncomfortable. But he was already infinitely better off than Ben so we knew that his discomfort would be quick and his progress (hopefully) in hours instead of days or weeks. That has definitely proven to be true! Alex got off CPAP last night and graduated into an oxygen hood, and by this morning didn't even need that. Today he is breathing freely and resting very comfortably, which is ironic because he is officially full-term as of today. I guess he was really going by the calendar! I was released this morning so I got to come home and rest a bit before going back to visit Alex this afternoon.

Today was also a memorable day because both Matt and I got to hold Alex for the first time. I got to hold him first and give him a chance to nurse, but we got to the hospital a little later than we'd planned and he had spent quite a bit of energy letting the nurses know he was hungry and promptly fell asleep after a few swallows. Hopefully if we can time things better and catch him when he's alert and just getting hungry we'll have more success because he doesn't seem to have any trouble with sucking and swallowing. Matt and I still enjoyed seeing him sleeping peacefully and looking like a happy, healthy little baby.

Alex was showing some signs of mild jaundice today so he'll be tanning under the phototherapy light overnight. Once that is corrected and he is taking all of his feeds by mouth, we'll get to bring our little guy home! The doctor is estimating Sunday or Monday right now. Here are some pictures from this afternoon. We forgot the camera as we ran out the door to meet the hungry boy at the hospital so we had to use my phone instead.

I am well on the road to recovery myself. This c-section has been much less painful than my first, probably for many reasons like not being an emergency, not 3 1/2 months early, not being stapled shut, and just having experienced it previously. Also, they gave me a terrific little girdle to velcro around my belly and hold everything in tight so I'm much more comfortable walking or turning over in bed. I can't believe I didn't get one of these things in the states because it's made a huge difference. The doctor told me I didn't have to wear it all the time but I haven't taken it off for a minute except to shower because it's so much help. I'm still not looking forward to having to travel to the hospital and back (especially when I have to take a taxi) but it's only about a 10-minute ride from our place so that's not bad.

Even though we didn't make it to full-term like we'd hoped, Matt and I feel incredibly blessed to have made it so far with Alex this time. Just knowing everything Ben went through and all of the risks and difficulties he faced, it was scary getting pregnant again and knowing we might put another baby through the same thing. Each passing day and week helped us breathe a little easier and think just a little more about a big, healthy baby. Honestly, I was amazed things went as smoothly as they did but we did work very hard to minimize all the risks and give this little guy every opportunity to fully cook. And then all we could do was pray and leave things in God's hands because it was ultimately HIS decision on when we'd meet Alex and we're so thankful that it was at 36 weeks this time instead of 24! While I was in the recovery room by myself, all I could think was "thank you Lord for getting us this far!".

Family Update: Tuesday 8-July

Good News: Laura will be discharged tomorrow and Alex is now off nasal c-pap. Alex is breathing under the oxygen enriched hood. His lungs' abilities to transfer oxygen to the blood stream and remove carbon dioxide have well improved. His breathing is less labored and less frequent which are all positives. Assuming his blood gas levels remain as is or improve, the doctors may try normal feedings (bottle or the boobs) tomorrow. This means tomorrow Laura may have an opportunity to hold Alex for the 1st time since delivery....I know she can't wait! Our family appreciates all the kind messages, calls, gifts, and prayers received. God Bless.

It's a Boy

Alexander Lee Kirkham was born Saturday July 5th 3:37pm Singapore time (2:37am Houston). Weight = 6.63 lbs, length = 51 cm. Laura and Alex are doing well. Laura will be discharged Tuesday or Wednesday and we think Alex will be discharged in 7-10 days. Alex's lungs are slightly immature (c-section was scheduled for July 16th). He is currently in the NICU on C-pap with 30% oxygen to help keep his airways open. The doctors have been pleased with his breathing in the past 48 hours ( he required a little more oxygen last night but is now back to 30%). He is taking his feeds well and shows good signs of removing the moisture from his lungs. Ben saw his brother twice and certainly understands things have changed.

Big Boy!

I just got back from my visit with the doctor and we figured out why I've "blossomed" so much over the past couple of weeks - the baby is already about 7lbs 4oz! And still a month away from his true due date!! There are definitely no worries about delivering him two weeks early anymore, or even sooner than that if he decides, because he's a very healthy size already. That's already 4 times bigger than Ben's birth weight. What a blessing!!

The doctor was surprised the baby had grown so much recently but I told her my petite little mom had two babies well over 8lbs, so it sounds about right. I want to have the biggest baby in that nursery :)
